'Finding The Voice' Workshop 17th May 2008

Saturday 17 May 2008, 2-5pm

Finding The Voice

Can't sing? Can't sing well? Sing well but know it could be easier? Would you like to find your natural voice?

The Finding The Voice workshop will guide you to your natural voice and innate musical ability. Vocal work is supported by simple yoga and relaxation techniques, freeing body and mind to free the voice. Sound and music have a powerful effect on our wellbeing. Finding The Voice is a way into that power.

The workshop is led by Stefan Cartwright, a musician and yoga practitioner who has travelled widely leading workshops and giving concerts. His musical compositions have received global interest. For further information visit his website: www.resona.co.uk

Introducing the Shruti box...

Stefan will introduce the Shruti box, a small portable reed organ with universal appeal. The Shruti box provides simple continuous drone chords to tone or sing along with and draw inspiration from. People often describe the sound as enchanting and calming. It is easy and satisfying to play, requiring only minimal instruction to get started.

The Shruti box was relatively unknown until quite recently. Stefan travelled around the main population centres of India visiting instrument makers on his quest to find a good instrument. He now uses the instrument in live music performances, recordings, workshops and with children in schools.

His interest led him to explore different materials and co-develop a new design with the maker in India. The new model comes in two tunings: C-C and low G-G. It produces warm, strong drone chords in any key and is robust enough for the touring musician. Instruments will be available to play during the workshop and are available for purchase from Samurai Music.

Musicians, therapists, group facilitators and meditators are now using the Shruti box. The acclaimed Palestinian singer Reem Kelani and folk artist Karine Polwart are both converts to the new model and use it in performance and workshops. It can also be used to demonstrate basic musical principles making it useful for educators.
