The Shruti box is a simple, portable reed/bellows instrument designed for making rich, pleasing drone chords. Drone chords are simple combinations of notes which can be sounded continuously, providing a basis for musical play. It is an offspring of the Indian harmonium with its origins in Western Europe and is truly a universal instrument, accessible to all.

The GR1 was co-developed by musician/composer Stefan Cartwright and a leading instrument maker based in India. After several years playing and exploring its possibilities, he took the finest design available and improved it. The result: a smaller, easier to play instrument, of good construction and with a great sound. Stefan also discovered a more ergonomic approach to playing the instrument making it more accessible.

Our new model is easy and satisfying to play, requiring minimal instruction to get started. To create a drone, simply choose the notes you want, draw back the bellows and you’re away.

It is an ideal companion for vocal work and musical exploration and is gaining popularity with singers, voice coaches, vocal group leaders and musicians around the world. The GR1 is small, portable and robust. Made from solid pine and solid teak wood and fitted with quality metal reeds for a clear and warm tone. The GR1’s unique bellows system gives the player control over the instruments volume and sustain.

The instrument comes in two different tunings, each with a full chromatic octave of thirteen notes, enabling chords to be created in any key.

The Models available are:

C Tuning - Features a one octave tuning range from middle C to C above.
Uses brass reeds for a warm, mellow tone with subtle harmonics.

Low G Tuning - Features a one octave tuning range from low G to middle G.
Uses bronze reeds for a deep, bold and rich tone.

The Shruti box measures 38 x 25 x 6.5 cm and weighs 3.5kg. It comes with a black carry case and full operating instructions. You are welcome to collect your shruti box.

Stefan's passion with sound led him to explore different materials and co-develop a new Shruti design with the maker in India. The new limited edition model comes in two tunings: C-C and low G-G. It produces warm, strong drone chords in any key and is robust enough for the touring musician.

On Saturday 17th May 2008, Stefan is leading a wonderful workshop where you'll be exploring your voice with the Shruti box!
