There are perhaps thousands of different musical instruments in the world, and they can be classified into different categories. The traditional way of dividing and grouping instruments, based on the instruments of an orchestra, was as follows: - Strings - the sound made by a vibrating string, or strings.
- Wind - the sound made by a vibrating column of air.
- Percussion - the sound made by something being struck.
However, this did not take in to account other instruments such as the Aboriginal bullroarer, jaw harp or harmonica, which did not seem fit in to any of the three groups. Then early in 20th century, another method of musical instrument classification was established called the Hornbostel-Sachs system, which refined and further divided musical instruments as: - Aerophones - any type of vibrating air
- Chordophones - vibrating string
- Membranophones - vibrating stetched membrane such as a drum head
- Idiophone - the instrument itself vibrating, such as a bell, or a xylophone
- Electrophone - uses electronic oscillators to make the sound
