Drums

Humans have been beating on some form of drum (membranophone) from as far back as history records, excavations show drums first appeared at least 6,000 BC. Some excavated hollowed out logs indicate that primitive tribes may have used these ancient sound implements as musical instruments and communication devices. However, it is believed that even stone age man may have beaten rocks in a percussive manner as a form of early communication.

As humans evolved, drums took on a more prominent role in tribal ceremonial gatherings where they accompanied ritual dancing and celebration. Today, many people are finding drumming workshops and drum circles a good way of connecting with others, perhaps in an almost tribal fashion. For some, playing drums and following a drum beat is a hypnotic and important link back to the time of our ancestors.
